8-ballers put cues in rack

The Millicent Ladies 8-Ball competition has officially come to a close after more than 50 years of play.

Due to dwindling numbers, the games have ceased and the bank account has been closed.

It held around $1400 and it has been donated to Ovarian Cancer research.

The competition began in the early 1970s and extended well beyond the Millicent township.

As well as Millicent’s three hotels, 8-Ball was also played at the Millicent and District Community Club which closed in 2018.

Over the years, players went to compete at outlying places like the Glencoe Football Club and the Southend Community Club.

At its height, there were 15 teams with six players in each equating to 90 women playing 8-Ball each week.

The Millicent Men’s 8-Ball competition responded to flagging female participation a few years ago by introducing mixed games.
