Free campsites to help put region on map

New free camping sites across the district have been earmarked for community feedback.

Eight proposed new sites have been listed by Grant District Council, including Surfers Way Beach Carpark 2 and 3, Birdhide, 816 Eight Mile Creek Road, Dry Creek, Orwell Rocks, Allendale East Recreation Reserve, and two sites at Blackfellows Caves

In total 23 sites were considered by council, however the final eight were determined the most appropriate based on their size, location, fire and safety factors, proximity to townships and service facilities.

Mayor Richard Sage said the district was becoming popular with campers.

“We have amazing places to visit and stay. There is a demand for more free camping sites as people wish to explore our nature-based tourism,” he said.

“We wish to maintain and look after our beaches and pristine coastal landscapes whilst also welcoming people to the region to be able to explore what we have to offer.”

A report with the recommendations was submitted at council’s October 6 meeting.

Currently five designated free sites exist within the district.

It was reported though many other sites have been used for free camping, the intention of additional free camping sites would limit camping to appropriate locations and enable better regulation of these sites.

Fifteen locations were deemed not appropriate following discussions at a council workshop held in August, and comments received from the Department for Environment and Water (DEW).

The report outlined the advantages and disadvantages of each site.

It also contains feedback from the owners of land where that land is not under the care and control of council.

Feedback can be provided online at yoursaydcg.com.au, ballot boxes located at the Port MacDonnell Community Complex and Council Office, or via written submission emailed to info@dcgrant.sa.gov.au, or posted to PO Box 724, Mount Gambier, SA, 5290.

The consultation findings will be presented at council’s November meeting.
