There was plenty of slime mixed with science as the Mount Gambier Science Fair hit town over the weekend.

The Science Collective director Brian Haddy was pleased with the attendance, with a long line of children waiting eagerly to get in the doors before they opened.

“It has been wonderful to see so many young families,” Mr Haddy said.

“What we as organisers and presenters get out of it is the smiles on the children’s faces and the excitement.”

Mr Haddy said the hands-on science stations were a big hit with this year’s crowd.

“People loved making towers with spaghetti and marshmallows, building bridges with supplied materials and trying to write their name backwards in a mirror,” he said.

“I think it is great for kids to have their parents at their side encouraging, supporting, helping and offering things which does not happen often in life.

“We have brought more hands-on stuff them ever before and we will keep building on that every year.

“We are appreciative of the support The SE Voice has given us and we are looking forward to coming back here every year.”

Chemistry show presenter Nitro Nat is working hard to break the stereotypes surrounding scientists.

“I try and show that scientists do not just wear white lab coats,” she said.

“I am all about female and STEM and showing that anyone can become a scientist.

“As long as you are safe and wearing the right protective gear you can wear whatever you want.

“It is really cool bringing this stuff out to rural cities, giving the kids an opportunity to see that science is also important, that it is something worth pursuing and that anyone can be a scientist.”
