Pennant bowls action may off during the Christmas, New Year break, but the Port MacDonnell Bowls Club held its Men’s and Ladies Championship Triples in fine but cool conditions recently.
A total of seven teams nominated for the men’s event sponsored by All Digital Hearing.
Skipper Kelvin Butler led Paul Weir and John Naismith played strongly to defeat Bruce Bain, Barrie Schmidt and Daryl Sims 16-8.
Butler’s team then met Danny Gaut, Justin Brown and Joe Pruis, but easily overcame their opponents 25-6 to make their way through to the Grand Final with two wins on the trot.
Donald Forbes’ rink of Kevin Osman and Jimmy Williams showed they were also made of strong stuff to defeat Terry Seiler, Michael Glynn and Chris Neglin by two shots.
The victory pushed Forbes’ team to a matchup with Tim Wrightson, Keith Dowdell and Wayne Dowdell in the next round and won 11-9.
These results set up the decider between Butler’s team and Forbes’ outfit.
In what proved to be a great close final to watch, the teams gave it everything.
Neither side could gain the upper hand with only two shots in it on the last end.
With Butler’s team being one up going into the last end, Williams put his first bowl only inches from the kitty.
Naismith finished just inches shorter and Weir put a bowl within a foot.
Unfortunately for Forbes his bowl just pushed Naismith bowl inches through and closer for the shot meaning Butler’s team won the end and the Championship 17-15 against Forbes, Osman and Williams.
Four teams nominated for the Ladies Championship sponsored by Dollar Curtains and Blinds and Kay Feast.
Heather Richards led Judy Grosvenor and Jan Dowdell against Robyn Burley, Marilyn Sutton and Lorraine Mackereth.
In a belting battle, Richards’ experience proved decisive as her team prevailed by a single shot 13-12.
In the other semi-final Elaine Pruis, Lyn Vanderley and Sharon Perryman defeated Jennie Tilley, Carol Schmidt and Nell Lucas in more convincing fashion 19-10.
The results set up a decider fought between Richards’ team against Pruis’ team to decide the fate of the championship.
Richards and her team mates raced off to a fast start to hold the high ground.
However, but Pruis’ side slowly pegged the deficit back to keep the spectators interested.
But Richards, Grosvenor and Dowdell found the perfect response to rebuild
the lead and seal a 24-16 victory to seal the championship.
