Calcuttas set to complement racing triple treat

It’s now been 40-odd years since greyhound racing’s Mount Gambier Cup Calcutta was first conducted in a woolshed on Jubilee Highway.

Due to Covid, the Calcutta has not been conducted since 2019, the year Galactic Athena struck a blow for the locals when winning the Group Listed event.

But it’s back this year as part of the Triple Treat of Racing – the three Mount Gambier codes all conducting their major cups and associated social events over a 10-day period.

The Mount Gambier Racing Club hosted a Cocktail Party at the Commodore Motel last night.

And it is conducting its Calcutta at the Gambier Hotel tonight before the running of tomorrow’s Scott Group of Companies Gold Cup.

Then, tomorrow night the Mount Gambier Greyhound Racing Club and the Mount Gambier Harness Racing Club are conducting a joint Calcutta at the Commercial Hotel from 6.30pm.

The Matthews Petroleum 49th Mount Gambier Pacing Gold Cup will be run on Saturday night.

Following on Sunday afternoon are heats of greyhound racing’s Mount Gambier Cup (512 metres).

The Triple Treat of Racing wraps up a week later when the Group 3 Carlin & Gazzard MG 42nd Mount Gambier Cup will highlight a big day of racing at Tara Raceway on Sunday, April 10.
