The standard and conditions of tennis courts in Mount Gambier was one of a number of updates requested at a recent Mount Gambier City Council meeting.

Councillor Paul Jenner asked for an update on the Olympic Park and Reidy Park tennis courts, including life expectancy, future plans and conversations about the facilities with other sporting organisations and
Grant District Council.

Cr Jenner requested the update include future plans for tennis in line with the Sport, Recreation and Open Spaces Strategy (SROSS).

He also queried what conversations council had with Tennis SA, the Mount Gambier and District Tennis Association (MGDTA) and the Grant District Council.

“What conversations has council had with regards to the current condition of courts and the future direction of tennis in Mount Gambier since discussions when Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre started?” Cr Jenner said.

City Infrastructure general manager Barbara Cernovskis said council had no accurate data on the condition of these courts.

However, she said the facilities had reached or were nearing end of life.

“This advice is not inconsistent with the understanding that arose from the 2016 MGDTA Strategy,” she said.

“As leased assets, council is not responsible for the repair maintenance and replacement of tennis courts to a club standard.

“Council has no current plans from the MGDTA for upgrading the facilities of which they have responsibility.

“There have been no broader stakeholder discussions facilitated by MGDTA that council is aware of since 2016.”

Ms Cernovskis said the Olympic Park precinct had been identified in the SROSS.

“However, an implementation plan for SROSS is yet to be developed and a decision of council would be required to prioritise projects within this plan,” she said.
