Youngsters experience big league at Adelaide Oval

More than 60 Mid South Eastern Football League juniors got the opportunity of a lifetime when they played on the Adelaide Oval during AFL round 9 halftime as Adelaide played Saint Kilda.

There were 44 AFL NAB Auskickers as well as 20 kids from the little league who took to the same ground where the Adelaide side defeated the Saints 121-69.

SANFL game development officer for the Glenelg country zone Heath Sims was an integral part of making the occasion come to fruition.

Sims said each year there were five or six AFL half time games allocated to Glenelg Football Club due to the SANFL roster.

“We get three games for the South East kids for which I split it up into the leagues being KNTFL, Mid SE and Western Border,” he said.

“The kids were represented from all MSE clubs.

“The experience to be on Adelaide Oval or any oval in Australia for any Auskicker is an experience in itself and playing where their heroes and all that play and AFL stars and that, it is just a great experience for them.

“It creates a bit more work down here (than in the city) because I prefer to enable all clubs to have the opportunity.

Kalangadoo Football Club junior coordinator Adam Box accompanied eight Kalangadoo Football Club juniors to the event.

“To see the delight on the kids’ faces was fantastic and it makes junior coaching and being involved in junior football all the worth while,” he said.

“They were so wrapt to be a part of it and to get to play on the Adelaide Oval was just a huge experience for them.”
