The Mount Gambier Pioneers are set to kick off the King’s Birthday long weekend in style, hosting the Diamond Valley Eagles at Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre tomorrow night.

The OneFortyOne Pioneers women and Castec Rural Pioneers men will be looking to follow on from their solid wins last week.

The Pioneers men are currently sitting seventh on the NBL1 South conference ladder, with the Eagles in eighth spot.

Mens head coach Richard Hill said his side was preparing to take on the Diamond Valley Eagles at Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre on Friday night.

“We want to see a bit more of the same from last Friday,” he said.

“We had contributions right across the board, everyone played well so that was encouraging.”

Hill said the Eagles were a “middle of the road type of team”.

“They have had some good wins,” he said.

“It is a game we would be expecting to win, but if you do not play well you do not win in this competition.

“We need to be ready to play.”

Hill said he was hoping there would be another good crowd in attendance to support the side.

“Last week was a fantastic crowd, both sides of the stands were pretty full,” he said.

“We have always had tremendous support, a big crowd always makes you feel good, as in terms of whether you can measure that I do not know.

“I’m sure the players love it, the home court advantage is fantastic, everything about the night is pretty good.”

Women’s head coach Matt Sutton encouraged fans to come along and fill Wulanda as the fourth placed Pioneers take on eight placed Diamond Valley.

“It should be a good contest, they have some good size and a good size guard,” he said.

“Their perimeter threats will be challenge for us, they are a much improved team on last year.

“I think it’s the perfect way to start the long weekend in the comfort of Wulanda and the entertainment the games will provide, we are hoping for a good crowd.”
