Port MacDonnell v Glencoe
Glorious displays of goal kicking were rare on a wet day on Saturday but one of the stand-outs was by Port MacDonnell recruit Colby Munro’s 10 majors at Glencoe.
The slightly-built newcomer was elusive in the forward lines in round 10 of the Mid South East Football League as the Demons cruised to a 63-point win.
Munro’s individual scoreboard was greater than what was produced by his 21 opponents from the Murphies.
It took his season’s tally to 30 and third in the current league rankings.
Mount Burr’s Jack Gregory leads the way with 35 goals with Nangwarry co-captain Andrew Hyland on 31.
Despite the 10-goal feat, the best-on-ground accolade went to Port MacDonnell’s four-time Mail Medallist Will Macdonald.
His side had opened up a 36-point advantage by the first break and were never under threat thereafter.
The seasiders’ percentage is well above 65 and they are well-placed for a top two finish by the end of the minor round.
Earlier in the day, there was a serious injury in the B Grade and the SA Ambulance Service had to be summoned from Millicent.
Looking ahead to Saturday, Port MacDonnell hosts Kongorong while Glencoe heads to Hatherleigh.
Mount Burr v Nangwarry
The exceptional efforts of honorary groundsman Peter Henderson meant the Saints and the Mozzies had a well-grassed and relatively firm surface to play on at Mick and Jean Walker Oval at Mount Burr.
Nangwarry kicked to the southern end with the breeze and had the first goal on the board through Jack Stocker.
Mount Burr quickly overtook the visitors and were never headed thereafter.
The Saints had a purple patch when they added five goals in the third term.
The Mozzies were stirred into action at the last change and finished the game with a 12-goal blitz.
The upgraded lighting system proved its worth, while Jack Gregory was unstoppable at full-forward.
His game-tally of 12 put him in first place on the league goal-kicking list.
Owing to its scheduled bye and the annual SA Country Championships at Nuriootpa, Nangwarry has a three week lay-off.
Its next game is at Tantanoola on July 15.
Mount Burr is on the road to Tantanoola on Saturday.
Robe v Tantanoola
Owing to a programming quirk, Robe Oval was one of three grounds on Saturday to host games on consecutive weekends, with the others being Glencoe and Kongorong.
Reports of deluges of four Imperial inches of rain within a few days across the region have been commonplace in recent times and Robe was no exception.
Despite the heavy conditions, Robe began well in the first term with the assistance of a chilly breeze which blew straight off Guichen Bay.
The Tigers never really got back into the game after managing a mere one behind in the first term while conceding 6.4.
The Roosters managed to boot 14 goals in all which is remarkable as it was missing nine of the players who had played at Tantanoola on April 15.
Coach Nathan Brown and the eight others are recovering from injury.
The loss has just about put paid to any Tiger aspirations of the major round of 2023.
Robe is on the road on Saturday as it takes on its arch-rival and reigning premiers Kalangadoo.
An honoured guest will be retired AFL legend Wayne Carey.
Tantanoola will be hosting cross-town competitor Mount Burr.
Kalangadoo v Kongorong
Kalangadoo’s premiership defence in the second half of the minor round began perfectly as it trounced the home side at Kongorong to the tune of 87 points.
The Magpies allowed the Hawks to post 16 goals in the opening game of 2023 but this was cut to a mere four goals in round 10.
The Hawks had the first use of the strong northerly breeze which favoured the school end but the scoreboard showed one goal apiece at quarter time.
Kalangadoo added six goals to nil in the second term and then Honors went Kongorong’s way in the third.
The Magpies again had the breeze at their backs in the final term and finished with a burst of nine goals.
After a long absence from footy, another Jenkin played at Kongorong on Saturday.
Sadly, for the Hawks, Nick Jenkin has opted to play for Kalangadoo after leaving the Western Border Football League.
Kalangadoo is at home to Robe in round 11 and Kongorong heads to the coast at Port MacDonnell.
Early starters at the Kalangadoo Oval from 9am will be able to see retired AFL legend Wayne Carey lending a hand with the underage teams.
He will provide some coaching tips, umpire games and hand out medals before spending the afternoon relaxing on Benny’s Hill.
Magpies president Reece Carlson said the backing of sponsors had been pivotal in bringing the former North Melbourne premiership skipper to the club.
