Atime-honoured annual tradition will continue at Millicent and District Hospital on Monday for its 60-strong nursing contingent.
A Limestone Coast Local Health Network spokesperson said staff at Millicent and all other sites in this region will be proudly celebrating both International Day of the Midwife and International Nurses Day.
“We will be taking the opportunity to show our appreciation for the compassion, professionalism, and round the clock commitment our nurses and midwives show in the care they provide to our patients,” the spokesperson said.
“Our health professionals across the Limestone Coast will come together to mark the occasion at a variety of events including morning get togethers and afternoon teas.
“Nurses and midwives will also receive a small token of appreciation from the nursing and midwifery leadership team.
“At Millicent Hospital the occasion will be celebrated with a special nurse decorated cake from a local bakery, an opportunity for staff to wear colourful scrubs, and an invitation to share special comments and acknowledgments across the site.”
In years gone by, senior Millicent Hospital staff have cooked a sausage sizzle to mark the day while the distribution of gift bags by such personnel has also been a popular gesture.
International Nurses Day allows the community to recognise the dedication and commitment of the hard-working nurses who continue to deliver quality care throughout the country’s health and aged care sector.
It also roughly coincides with the 204th anniversary of the birth of pioneering British nurse Florence Nightingale who is considered the founder of modern nursing.
In other Millicent Hospital news, the third and final stage of the makeover of the former matrons’ apartment has commenced.
Renovations are being made to the bathroom and toilet facilities to provide greater comfort and privacy for visiting student nurses.
Much of the upgrade work is being undertaken by the Millicent and Surrounding Areas Health Support Group and other volunteers.
