60 years of worship ends

The Uniting Church at Beachport held its final service on Sunday and it was filled with almost 50 worshippers.

It has now ceased to be a place of worship and is expected to be sold.

The stone building was erected in Foster Street in the 1960s and is dedicated to St Matthew.

Discussions about the church’s future on account of a dwindling congregation were recently held involving local and Adelaide-based church officials and closure was decided.

As well as Uniting Church members, representatives of other local Christian churches were among the congregation for the historic occasion.

The Reverend Ian Dow, Presbytery Minister for the Uniting Church Presbytery of Southern SA, preached on that day’s Bible reading from St Mark’s Gospel.

Other key roles were filled by Michael Bleby who read the lessons and Jennifer Golding who provided the musical accompaniment on the keyboard.

Sunday services have been held fortnightly by the Uniting Church and there has also been a monthly service for Anglicans since 2018.

St Nicholas Anglican Church was closed in that year and Mr Bleby explained how agreement was reached to use the Uniting Church.

The only other church at Beachport is St Brigid’s Catholic Church and it is also a post-war structure.
