Many of the Robe-based fishing vessels are expected to part in the annual Blessing of the Fleet at Robe on October 6 with the crews of up to 15 local boats seeking divine protection.


As part of the service, celebrant Jan Bermingham will bless a crucifix and then toss it into the waters of the Lake Butler Marina.


The retrieved crucifix will be carried on one of the vessels throughout the remainder of the 2024-25 season which begins on September 1.


While stationed in a small tinny, the celebrant will also bless the fishing boats as they move around the marina and then out to sea.


Joy rides around Guichen Bay aboard the fishing vessels are always popular with the event which has been held at Robe for a number of decades.


Another important aspect of the Blessing of the Fleet is the laying of wreaths at the nearby fishermen’s memorial.


Support in staging the public event is provided each year by the 


Robe Professional Fishermen’s Association.


Executive member Paul Regnier said the 2024 Robe Blessing of the Fleet coincides with the October holiday long weekend and school hol days.


“Jan Bermingham has been our celebrant for many years,” Mr Regnier said.


“Fishers are waiting on changes in the Bonney Upwelling this year to see if the nutrient-rich waters will have any impact on lobster growth and catch rates.


“Another community activity staged each year by the Robe association is the New Year’s Eve fireworks.”


A similar Blessing of The Fleet is also staged at Beachport each year.
