Mount Gambier Library will host a special family event next month with local author Kylie Tull for the launch of her picture book Huxley’s Home.
The story follows Huxley the hermit crab who spends his days feasting on algae surrounding his ocean reef.
When Huxley realises his shell has become too tight, he sets off on an adventure to find a new home but his mission is hampered by an ocean of litter.
Author Kylie Tull (pictured) has always had a passion for reading and as a teacher she is especially interested in high-quality literature for children.
The idea for ‘Huxley’s Home’ came about after reading an article about how hermit crabs have been found using rubbish for their home instead of a shell.
Ms Tull was amazed at how adaptable creatures can be but also concerned that litter in and around the ocean has become so prevalent across the world.
“My hope is Huxley can help demonstrate the harm that can be done to animals as a result of litter and help people think about how they discard rubbish,” she said.
Library and Community Development manager Georgina Davison said the expressive illustrations by Alice Mastropaolo brought these ocean characters and settings to life and helped to create an engaging read for children of all ages.
“It is such an honour to be launching this fabulous book, not only because it is such an engaging story, but because Kylie is a local,” she said.
“It is so important to celebrate and promote local authors – especially those who have a passion about inspiring young readers to create their own stories.”
This is a family friendly event with a book reading, followed by an activity for children.
Huxley’s Home will be available for sale and signing on the day and the book can also be pre-ordered through Collins Booksellers.
The launch will be held on October 12 at 11am and with bookings already filling up fast, contact Mount Gambier Library on 8721 2540 or book online.
