Rally reaches finish line

After more than 500km and eight days on the road, the Upper Snuggery Racing Team completed its 12th annual River to Snuggery Rally at Millicent on Saturday.

A joyful field of 21 cars and 42 drivers tackled a series of challenges, from navigation on the open road to auto tests, sprints, hill climbs and tricky motorkhanas.

Many drivers call the Limestone Coats home and all sorts of vehicles were featured to entertain motoring enthusiasts such as Holden Monaros, Ford Falcons, Porsche Caymans, Ford Mustangs, a Mini and a 50-year-old Triumph.

The journey began alongside the Murray River at Renmark before the drivers criss-crossed the state from Mallala Raceway to the Limestone Coast finale at the Mount Gambier showgrounds and Millicent.

The stop in the Blue Lake City was highlighted by a series of tight motorkhana layouts which tested the driver’s reactions and their vehicle’s manoeuvrability.

A scenic cruise greeted the participants in Millicent before a short course at the sale yards and an event at the quarry finished the rally with a bang.

Although the event is more focused on fun, a trophy was still awarded to the fastest and most consistent pairing over the week on the road, this year going to Bill Davis and Peter Watkins in their Ford AU Falcon XR8.

Upper Snuggery Racing Team secretary Peter Burns said this year’s event was another enjoyable affair.

“It was a pretty big week and a lot of fun,” he said.

“It is basically just a large group of friends who are into motorsport and are all keen on the cars.

“We have only had a couple of minor mechanical problems, but everyone jumped in and we have been able to sort them out.
“We are not racing for sheep stations, so it has been great.”
