Common types of scams

IN the age of technology and computers it should come as no surprise that online scams are prevalent and common, many people of all ages, cultures and experiences have been scammed and while it can be embarrassing it is important these are reported. Scams are a billion dollar industry and the people behind scams operate on a volume basis.

Impersonation scams

Scammers will pretend to be from reputable businesses or organisation particularly from government (such as the ATO) or from a bank. They also may be a scammer trying to romance someone into giving away their money.

These scams try to scare people into transferring money or convincing people to download remote programs like AnyDesk to take control of your computer or phone.

They will say things need to happen quickly and give you very short timeframes to comply. This gives you less time to think things through and realise it is a scam.

Investment scams

These are opportunities to increase your money, usually online via crypto services.

They claim to either increase your money with little or no risk, or;

Increase your money exponentially

Always remember if it looks too good to be true it probably is.

Products and services scams

Again usually online but we have had a couple of in-person local examples in the Casterton and surrounding area.

If the product or service appears to be at a heavily discounted rate stop and think about it. Product may be stolen or services may be offered by unlicensed and uninsured people.

If services demand cash, particularly prior to the job completion there is a chance that this person is not legitimate.

Always record the credentials of anyone you agree to do business with. Check they are indeed working for a legitimate and reputable business and the work carried out is insured and/or subject to a guarantee.

Look at scamwatch.gov.au for more information on how to stay safe or come and see your local police.

Until I see you again,

A/Sgt Tim McMahon
