There will be plenty of bat versus ball contests for cricket lovers to enjoy this week as the Adelaide High School embarks on a short tour of the Limestone Coast today.
Although the finer details were still being discussed at the time of print, a total of three games will be played between the Adelaide High School’s Year 8/9 and 10 sides against East Gambier/North Sportsman’s Under 17’s outfit, plus the St Martins and Tenison Woods Colleges.
The St Martins and Tenison Woods College battles will form part of the Statewide Schools knockout competition, while a pair of friendly T20 fixtures against the East Gambier/North Sportsman’s Under 14 and 17’s team was added to kickoff the tour tonight.
The Year 10 travelling team meets St Martins Lutheran College in a T20 at Frew Park tomorrow, while the Year 8/9’s face Tenison Woods in a 35 over encounter at either Scott or Frew Park on the same day.
With Adelaide High located next door to the immaculately presented Sheffield Shield venue Karen Rolton Oval, the school has a high-performance cricket program run by Jeremy Appleton and Phil Hoplon.
No less than 10 of the 26 travelling players are part of the state system and will certainly provide a strong test to the locals.
Appleton is looking forward to traveling down to the Blue Lake City instead of forcing the Limestone Coast kids to travel long hours like usual.
“It will be a pretty good contest and we have not been able to travel much recently, so we thought it was a great opportunity to make a tour of it,” he said.
“Mount Gambier is normally the team travelling, so we thought we can take the pressure off them and expose them to some city kids.
“It will be fresh for everyone in my team because I do not think any of them have played any organised cricket in Mount Gambier.
“I am sure it will be a great experience to get involved in the community and take part in a trip not just about cricket, but also life skills.”
Appleton wanted to thank the entire Mount Gambier cricket community and especially Brad Maney, Michael Minuzzo and Rob Johncock for making it happen.
