Allen awarded

Mount Gambier racing sensation Kai Allen has added another award to his collection after being named the 2024 Australian Young Driver of the Year award by Motorsport Australia.

The prestigious honour was awarded to the 20-year-old at the 2024 Motorsport Australia National Awards Gala presented by Shannons Insurance and attended by over 250 guests at Doltone House in Sydney.

A Motorsport Australia spokesperson said the young gun was a deserved winner after “turning heads with a podium on debut in the Toyota 86 Series, 11 out of 12 positions in Super 3, culminating in a Super2 Title in 2023 and landing a full time Supercars seat with Grove Racing in 2025”.

Allen said it was an honour to receive the accolade.

“It is an honour to get this award because there is a lot of young kids who are racing at the moment who are very talented, very well represented and it’s a tough gig out there,” he said.

“A massive thankyou to the Motorsport Australia board for choosing me and putting on a great night.”

Allen made his Supercars debut recently in round one of the Repco Supercars 2025 season at the Sydney Motorsport Park for the Thrifty Sydney 500.

“My first actual weekend as a full time supercars driver was pretty surreal and I think you get all involved in the weekend and you do not actually take a step back until you see your name on the car, your name on the transporter, all this whole bunch of team, all these guys and girls in the team working for you,” he said.

“It’s a pretty surreal feeling, it’s something I have always wanted to do since I have been so young, so I’m super grateful for the opportunity and I cannot wait to see what the rest of the career holds.”

Allen is currently 20th in the Repco Supercars championship rankings after the first round and will compete in the Melbourne SuperSprint at Albert Park this weekend as the main support category for the 2025 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix.
