Assault sentence suspended

A42-year-old Limestone Coast man has learned his fate after assaulting a local hotel employee earlier this year.

The man faced the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court unrepresented recently in front of Magistrate Koula Kossiavelos.

The court heard the offence occurred on February 29 in which the defendant punched the Macs Hotel gaming room duty manager after being ordered to leave the premises due to disruptive behaviour.

In sentencing, Magistrate Kossiavelos said the behaviour was “regrettable” and “people are not punching bags”.

“This person obviously works there so as a duty manager in a gaming room of a hotel, he is exposed to a lot of drunken people and you were extremely drunk on the day in question but he should not fear for his life,” she said.

“You need to be aware that whatever triggers happened on this occasion are kept in check.”

The man was given a 12 month suspended sentence.
