The Mount Gambier District Little Athletics Centre took a team of 19 athletes to Adelaide recently to compete at the 2021 State Individual Championships. Coach Sally Taylor also came along to make sure the athletes were ready to compete at their best and she did not stop for the whole weekend.
Mount Gambier enjoyed a great carnival with 10 medals achieved including five gold, one silver and four bronze, plus many personnel best performances. All of the athletes did a great job with many personal bests and some new friendships formed as the club achieved all three goals of having fun, making new friends and doing your best on the day.
There were quite a few stand out performances on the weekend led by Hamish Gordon. Gordon won two gold medals in discus and shot put, plus a bronze medal in the 1100 metre race walk.
He also achieved a state best performance for the Under 11 boys in the discus with a throw of 35.40 metres. Ben Ellis secured one gold medal in the Under 9 boys high jump and a bronze medal in the 800m race.
Harry Ellis has been selected in the State Little Athletics Team for the 1500 metre and 800 metre events, while new athlete Saskia Brogan competed in Under 10 girls and recorded personal bests in all of her events.
Mount Gambier keeps turning out race walkers with six athletes competing in the discipline for five medals. Emily Lynch continued her great form winning the Under 14 girls 1500 metre race walk with a personal best. The Under 12 boys had two athletes competing in the 1500 metre race walk with Les Jagger winning gold and Jacob Gordon also on the podium in third.
Brother and sister duo Hamish and Annabelle Gordon won bronze and silver respectively in the 1100 metre race walk with new personal bests. Mt Gambier District Little Athletics Centre will hold its wind-up and medal presentation on April 11.
The club will also start its cross country season earlier in the day at Marist Park from 10am.
