The OneFortyOne Pioneers women will take to the court tomorrow night for their first home game of the NBL1 South conference season.
The Pioneers will host the Casey Cavaliers in round 2, with Mount Gambier coming off two defeats in their opening matches last weekend.
Likewise the Cavaliers suffered a heavy loss to Dandenong in round 1, so both teams will be looking for their opening win of the season.
The OneFortyOne Pioneers currently sit 17th on the ladder, with Casey Cavaliers in 19th.
Pioneers head coach Matt Sutton said his side had put the weekend’s losses behind them, and were focussed on tomorrow night’s clash.
For several of the Pioneers’ new recruits it will be their first time playing in front of the Wulanda home crowd.
“It is always good to get onto our home court and we look forward to the game on a short turn around,” Sutton said.
Sutton said the coaching staff and players had spent the week researching the Cavaliers, who had some talented ballers.
“They have got a bit of New Zealand vibe,” he said.
“Esra McGoldrick played for the national side, they have also got another player Sharne Robarti and both played with Haleigh (Reinoehl) and Maddy (Timms) in the New Zealand league.
“They have also got Ahlise Hurst so we are going to have our work cut out for us.”
Sutton said his side was hopeful that Maddy Timms would be cleared to play, however import Jayda Jansen will not arrive in Mount Gambier until next week, while Keryl Ousey is still playing overseas.
The Pioneers will once again draw on the younger members of the squad, many of whom played crucial court time in the opening round.
Sutton was full of praise for the youngsters, whom he believed would continue to develop their skills as the season progressed.
“I’m really proud of their efforts and we feel really good about giving them that opportunity,” he said.
Tomorrow night’s game will tip off at 6pm at Wulanda.
