Barker election challengers emerge

Liberal Member for Barker and shadow cabinet minister Tony Pasin faces numerous challengers in his bid to win a fifth term in office at the May 3 poll.

National Party member and Tintinara farmer Jonathan Pietzsch has again nominated for Barker while Cody Scholes had originally been a Pauline Hanson One Nation candidate but is now running as an independent.

Media reports have stated another independent candidate will be Riverland resident Ian Penno while Tracey Pfitzner will represent Clive Palmer’s new Trumpet of Patriots Party.

The Greens and Labor Party have yet to announce their Barker candidates with nominations closing across the nation on April 10.

Mr Pasin holds one of the safest seats in the Federal Parliament with a margin of 16%.

His two party preferred vote was as high as 90% at the Tintinara booth at the 2022 poll when he saw off eight challengers.

It is understood that Barker had never before attracted nine nominations since the seat was created in 1903.

Of the nine nominations which were lodged, seven were party-endorsed candidates and two were independents. Barker has always been a conservative seat.
