Beachport oval future debate

The fate of a memorial oval named after noted Beachport cricketer Dick McIntyre will be decided tonight (Tuesday) at the monthly meeting of Wattle Range Council.

The Beachport Oval was renamed in his honour in 1998 and this came two years after his death at the age of 61.

Cricket has not been played there for several years and the neighboring Beachport Golf Club wants to incorporate the oval into its existing lease.

Council went to public consultation on the proposal and the sole respondent expressed support but asked the Dick McIntyre Memorial Oval name be retained.

Tonight’s meeting agenda has a staff recommendation to endorse the modified Beachport Golf Club lease but makes no reference to retaining the Dick McIntyre Memorial Oval name.

During his working life, Mr McIntyre was a labourer, council worker and farmer.

His sporting pursuits included tennis, football and cricket at Millicent and Beachport.
