Bell trial continues

The trial of Independent Mount Gambier MP Troy Bell on fraud charges continues in the District Court in Adelaide this week.

Judge Simon Stretton has been hearing legal argument in the absence of a jury in recent weeks.

The defence counsel is Marie Shaw KC while Jemma Litsper is representing the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Mr Bell is accused of misappropriating more than $2m of public funds but has repeatedly stated his innocence.

The offences relate to his work for an independent learning centre in Mount Gambier prior to being elected as a Liberal MP in 2014.

Mr Bell was charged with the offences in 2017 after an investigation by South Australia’s Independent Commissioner Against Corruption.

The Independent MP continues with many of his usual duties such as the annual Anzac Day commemoration in Mount Gambier.
