Round 4 – DECEMBER 19
Penola v Mil Lel
Mil Lel came away with a thrilling win over Penola in round four of the Globe Hotel Big Bash competition in Penola just before the Christmas break.
Mil Lel won the toss and elected to bat, with skipper Will Rowland kicking off a productive innings, making 24 off 34.
Mil Lel continued to chip away at building a lead as William Von Stanke made 10 with Archer Virtanen contributing six.
At the bottom of the list Mil Lel managed a few decent scores to establish a solid total with Alexander Stidiford making eight and Mitchell Douglas putting five on the board.
After 20 overs Mil Lel finished with 133.
Penola started strong at the crease as openers Jack Mullan and Michael McGurk put the side in a good position to get the win. Mullan made a solid 24 while McGurk put 35 on the board.
The Eagles struggled after the departure of Mullan and McGurk, with a 10 run score from Bredon Smart and a solid 29 from Drew Clayfield as the two notable scorers.
Penola came up short in the final over as they had a chance to take the win but could not get over the line with back to back wickets from Mil Lel’s Mitchell Douglas in the final two balls.
Penola ended on 132 runs.
North Sportsmans v East Gambier
East Gambier cemented its place in the finals with a big win over North Sportsmans at Marist Park.
The Doggies started the night at the crease after winning the toss, beginning well off the back of a great innings from Alex Hill.
Hill did well to put runs on the board, finishing the innings not out on 46 runs.
The Doggies were great at the crease across the batting order with Harrison Evans adding 14 runs.
At the back end of the innings East finished strong as Jake Wight contributed 15 while Alex Hentschke made 10.
Marc Roberts also finished strong as he ended the innings on 14 not out and after the 20 overs East registered a score of 109.
With a solid score to chase the Tigers struggled early on as Mitch Lewis made 17 while the others at the top of the order struggled to get into double digits.
Down the list North could not get much going as the only notable run makers were Isaac Mulraney with 15, Declan Kenny 13 and Tim Young 11.
The Doggies were able to get North all out on 88 points.
West Gambier v South Gambier
West Gambier helped set up its grand final berth when it overcame South Gambier at Malseed Park.
The Roos were sent out to bat after the Dees won the toss and elected to bowl.
Justin de Jong and Niall Easterbrook cold not get much going with de Jong making 11 and Easterbrook eight.
Jayden Prior stepped up for the Roos at the crease with a great innings, making 38 not out from 34 balls.
Jake Blackwell helped by putting 12 runs on the board as West finished with 99 runs.
In reply the Dees got off to a tough start with a four from Jed Sims and two ducks from Robbie Drenthen and Alex Carter.
The Dees got a bit of a boost in the middle of the order as Sukhbir Singh made a solid 11 while Cambell Hateley contributed 10.
South struggled down the list until Noah Maxwell came to the crease and got his side back into the game late in the innings, making 33 off 29.
However, despite the late push the Dees could not pull off the win as the Roos were able to get them all out with a couple overs to spare.
Round 5 – Round 4 – DECEMBER 21
South Gambier v Penola
Penola will launch it’s finals campaign on a high after a big win over South Gambier in round five.
Penola had a big innings at the crease to start the match as James Alexander scored century while Jack Mullan one upped him as he made a century.
Other notable performances from the innings included Josh Doyle who made 11 and Bredon Smart who added 10, to see the Eagles finish with 186.
After a big game in the previous round Noah Maxwell started as opener and made a big impact, scoring 39 off 44 while his partner Sukhbir Singh made 39.
Down the list the Dees struggled to recreate the success from the openers as they battled to get many big scores.
The Dees ran out of time to make up the runs, ending on 125 after 20 overs.
West Gambier v East Gambier
West Gambier capped off their great big bash season with a fifth straight win as they faced East Gambier in round five.
East started well with the bat as Alex Hill made 14 while Ben Hentschke put together a great innings, scoring a half century.
Besides Jake Wight who made 27, East could not get much on the board as they finished with 127 runs from their 20 overs.
West wasted no time in chipping into East’s total as captain Justin de Jong had a big innings, making 67 off 51.
West continued to chase down the Doggies’ total as Jayden Prior made 13 while Sam Willis and Samuel Coxen both contributed 15.
West made up the runs with a couple overs to spare as they finished on 131.
Mil Lel v North Sportsmans
North Sportsmans finished their season well with a good win over Mil Lel.
North had a solid innings at the crease to start the match as Mitch Lewis scored 18.
Down the list North had many big scores as Nicolas Brown contributed 26 while Declan Kenny finished not out on 45.
The Tigers ended their 20 overs on 134 runs.
Mil Lel struggled at the crease as they could not get many contributors.
The only solid performances in the innings were Toby Grigg with 23 while Will Rowland made 10 and Vaibhav Patel with 11.
The Tigers were able to get Mil Lel all out as they ended on 84.
