The fine weather a respectable field of 112 men contested the Mount Gambier Golf Club’s Men’s Stableford earlier this month, sponsored by SE Fire Extinguisher Services.
The weather certainly warmed up for the afternoon golfers, but there were some very good scores posted.
Best score of the day went to Paul Reade (10) in A Grade (-9 – 10), with an outstanding 44 points.
Reade parred every hole on the front nine apart from the par 4 third, where he could only manage a bogey.
But this one over the card effort amassed 21 points at the halfway point.
His back nine started with a bogey 4 on the tough par 3 tenth, before once again getting on a run of pars to again shoot one over the card 37 shots to add a further 23 points.
Runner up in A Grade was Mathew Knowles (7), with 38 points.
Knowles’ round started slowly, only having 15 points after the ninth hole.
However, shooting an even to the card 36 off the stick on the back nine contributed a further 23 points to his score.
Daryl Taylor (14) took the win in B Grade (11 – 16) with 39 points.
Twenty points on the front was followed by a further 19 on the back had Taylor earn the win by one point from David McPherson (12) on 38 points with even splits of 19 points on both nines.
C Grade (17 – 45) was taken out by Winson Whare (17) with 42 points.
Whare collected most of his points on his opening nine holes with 23, followed by a further 19 on the back nine.
A highlight would have been his birdie on the par 5 15th hole for four points.
Second spot in C Grade was Phil Walters (18) with 39 points after splits of 20 and 19 points.
Players required 33 points or better on a countback to collect one of the 35 balls handed out.
Nearest to the pins were won by Adrian Ballintyne (9) on the eighth hole and Gordon Clark (9) on the 16th, with both players collecting a bonus ball for holing their birdie putts.
With the new year another good field of 99 entered the Thursday Stableford competition.
Trevor Roberts (38) took out the victory and $100 Pro Shop voucher with a fine 43 points.
Roberts actually started his round conservatively, and was equal to his handicap after five holes, before starting a roller coaster ride of scores on the next few holes.
A bogey 4 on the sixth hole added four points to his score, before a disastrous nine on the par 5 seventh failed to contribute.
This was followed by a par for four points on the par 3 eighth, which again was followed by an eight on the par 4 ninth hole, to once again not add anything to his tally.
At the half way point, Roberts had banked 17 points, but it was the back nine where Roberts used his additional shots, thanks to his handicap, to accumulate a further 26 points to finish at 43 points.
Roberts scored four points on the par 3 10th, par 4 14th, par 3 16th as well as the par 4 18th holes.
Runner up was Dave Evans (22) with 41 points.
In contrast to Roberts, Evans had 23 points at the turn, before adding a further 18 on the back nine.
Barry Page (23) and Stuart Skirving (11) both posted 39 points for their rounds and collected five and four balls respectively._
Graham Allen (21) and Craig Foster (6) won the countbacks to collect three and two balls each from the other players finishing on 38 points.
With the high scoring, players required 36 points or better on a countback to earn one of the remaining 16 balls.
Pro Shot winners were Stuart Skirving (11) on the eighth and Peppi Pace (13) on the 16th, each picking up five balls plus the extra birdie ball for rolling in their putts.
