Big field seeks medal

South West Freight sponsored this month’s Monthly Medal competition at the Mount Gambier Golf Club on Saturday, with 99 players making up the field.

With tough conditions and the course set up at its hardest, B Grader (11-16) Peter Lock (14) was the only player to better his handicap with a fine net 71.

With his win Lock will join the other Monthly Medal winners to contest the Barney Larkin Medal next year.

He took out the win in B Grade by three shots from Jason Millhouse (13) and Craig Torney (13) who both finished with net 74s.

It was Millhouse’s superior back nine which enabled him to take second spot.

In A Grade (-9.0 – 10) another countback was needed to split playing companions Adrian Ballintyne (10) and Richard Gosling (2), with both posting net 74.

This is the second time in the last few months that Ballintyne has been victorious over Gosling by the narrowest of margins.

The higher handicappers found the conditions the most difficult, with C Grade (17.0 – 45.0) won by Ian Ewart (21) with net 76.

Runner up was David Millard (20) with net 77.

Thirty balls were given out for scores of a net 79 or better on a countback.

Darren Griffin (15) won the Pro Shot on the eighth hole, with Bryan Pink (10) taking out the 16th.

Meanwhile, Scott Whicker (15) stood atop the leaderboard for the Thursday stableford competition for the second time in three weeks.

Whicker’s 41 points had him one clear of the nearest of the 70 players in the field.

Opening with a triple bogie eight on the first hole, Whicker may have considered heading straight back to the clubhouse.

Instead, five pars and three bogies later, he finished the front nine with 20 points.

He continued his good form by adding another 21 points on the back nine, which included an impressive birdie for four points on the 12th hole.

One point behind was David Boyce (13) who racked up 40 points.

If it was not for a couple of double bogies on two of the par 3s, the eight and 16th, Boyce could have easily taken out top honours.

Barry Page (23) and Roger Davis (8) both finished with 39 points, Max Tollner (19) scored 38 points and Graham Thomas (21), Richard Gosling (1), Henry Forbes (15) and Ken Whitehead (8) all scoring 37 points.

Thirty-four points or better on a countback was needed to win one of the extra 12 balls handed out with Pro Shot winners being Robert Perryman (7) on the eighth and Graham Robinson (22) on the 16th.

Robinson was the envy of all players, as he scored his first hole in one.

Robinson is one of the many hard working volunteers of the club and certainly deserves some recognition for all of his efforts.
