Big finish clinches win

Jim Ferrazzola’s experience in a number of sports in the region came to the fore in Saturday’s Stableford round at the Blue Lake Golf Club, knowing that if he scores on every hole then he would be in the running for the win.

And that’s exactly what he did, taking the outright win with his score of 39 points.

It was an up and down first three holes for the 21 handicapper, starting with a double bogey, par and double bogey before he picked up a 3 point hole on the 4th.

It was fairly steady golf from then on in, closing out his opening nine with a par on the 9th earning him 3 points.

A regulation start to his inward nine was quickly boosted with two 3 point holes on the 14th and 15th to have him looking at an exceptional round, but 2 consecutive 1 point holes dented that.

Ferrazzola finished well with a 4 point par on the last to clinch the win.

Lachlan Byrne (28) was on track to run him Ferrazzola down, turning with 19 points and two pars on the 13th and 14thearned him 4 points each to have Byrne sitting on 18 points with two holes to play.

Unfortunately a scrub eventuated on the 17th followed by a 1 point hole on the last cost him a chance for the win.

In A grade it was the ultra consistent Trevor Little who took the top step with his 36 points.

Supported by the Trevor Little fan club, Little had no less than 5 birdies in his round (3rd, 6th, 10th, 12th and 15th) that tallied 17 points alone.

Unfortunately there were too many 1 point holes and scrubs to go with his round to challenge for the outright win.

Battling back after an injury on the course, David Dowie is approaching his top form, taking out second place with his 34 points.

Playing off 11 there is not much room for error, having to par a number of holes just to break square with 2 points.

Dowie did that on his outward nine, having a slight stumble on the 6th before righting the shopping trolley with a par on the 8th to see him turn with 17 points.

He equaled that after book ending 3 point pars on the 10th and 18th for another 17 points.

It was a fair gap back to third place with Stephen Easterbrook (8) claiming third prize after a count back with Tim Smith after both finished on 32 points.

It was all or nothing for Easterbrook, either picking up with nil points or birdies on the 5th and 13th, the latter earning him 4 points alone.

Jamie Walters (15) led the way in B grade, taking the win with his score of 37 points.

It was steady plodding for Walters, turning with 17 points and having just 11 points after his first 6 holes on his inward nine before finishing with a flourish of 3 pars and 9 points.

It was tight for second and third in B grade with John Brown parring the last to just edge out Tony Brooks for the minor placings.

Having just 16 points on his card after the front nine Brown could have been forgiven to just hoping for the best, specially after opening his back nine with two 1 point holes.

However a flurry of pars (13, 15, 16 and 18) saw him come storming home for 10 points over the last 4 holes.

Brooks also had 4 pars over his inward nine for splits of 17 points apiece.

C Grade winner Lachlan Byrne made the most of his 28 handicap, his 4 pars earning him14 points alone.

A rough finish with a scrub and a 1 point on the last two holes cost him a tilt at the outright win but he will be more than happy to have taken the grade win.

Second place winner, David McKenzie turned back the clock with a superb birdie on the 6th having him reminisce of the golf he played in his younger years.

That 5 points propelled him to points on the outward nine and despite two 3 point holes, a scrub on the 13th cost him dearly to come in with 16 points.

Nick Driver (22) is making a habit of cleaning up the prize pool, this time finishing third in C grade with 34 points.

After opening with a scrub Driver put his head down and turned with 17 points which he emulated on the back nine thanks to his birdie on the 5th earning him a mammoth 5 points.

Ball winners were headed by Kevin Mansell 34, David Gould, Trevor Gartside, Vic Smith, Ken Milsop, Cole Hedwards, Mario Mancuso 33, Derek Sargeant, Tim Smith and David Johnston on 32.

Edging ever closer to that magic single figure handicap, Rosemary Martland went another step closer with her win in Saturday’s women’s Stableford competition at the Blue Lake Golf Club.

Battling the occasional shower and windy conditions Martland did well to keep it together over her outward nine with just the two 1 point holes on the 3rd and the 8th for 16 points.

Knowing that she had the game in her Martland then went on a par scoring spree with 7 consecutive pars on the inward nine, three of them earning her 3 points apiece.

A superb 21 points saw her take the outright win with a total of 37 which was probably even better in the squally conditions.

Jorja Morale continues her love of the game taking second place with 35 points.

Showing the same fortitude as her father (Bruce) Morale is getting close to the point where people will soon say to Bruce “Your Jorja’s father” rather than people saying “Your Bruce’s Daughter”.

Her splits of 17 and 18 saw her well clear of Lesley McPherson (34) in third.

“Kudos to McPherson who turned with just 14 points on her front nine but then showed her true Scottish pedigree to battle back with 18 points on the back nine to count out Karen Panagopolous after both finished on 32 points.

Despite the benign conditions scoring was hard to come by in Tuesday’s mid-week Par competition at the Blue Lake Golf Club with most players ending up in the negative.

Only a handful of players were able to break their handicap with David Quinn (20) being the best of them with +4.

Quinn had to hold off Cameron Saint (8) in a count back after both tied on +4 with the former like an Eskimo dancing for joy after being declared the winner.

Finishing just behind the two front runners was Curtis Coppetti (24) who was rewarded for his great round with third prize.

Nathan Muhovics led the ball winners list with his impressive +2, followed by Garry Fox, Chris Hoggan, Stephen Von Duve +1, Tony Morandin, Jake Turner 0, Wayne Dunford and Jim Ferrazzola on -1.

Fox also picked up an extra ball prize for having the best inward score.
