Bin collection set to cover more area

Grant District Council’s mobile garbage bin service will be expanded in 2022, after councillors voted in favour of a report that showed most residents were supportive of it being extended.

As of January 1, 2022 the council’s bin service will be expanded at Allendale East to Cape Douglas Road (terminating at Wash Lane), and the Princes Highway (Dohle Road to Fairbanks Road) and Attiwill Road.

It will also be expanded to Lange Road (terminating at Norman Road) and to Wye.

Moreover, council flagged that any opportunities for fast tracking the rollout of the service, including along existing routes between townships, will be explored and commenced “where feasible”.

The report’s author environmental services director Leith McEvoy said residents who had voted against the roll out and expansion of the service would be afforded a ‘grace’ period.

This would see the service delayed for six months before commencing for residents on July 1.

The roll out and expansion will likely affect residents of Cape Douglas and the Glenelg Highway, where just 45% and 67% of residents were supportive of the proposal, respectively.

In all other areas assessed, the proportion of people in support of expanding the mobile bin service was far higher – at 83% or above – than that of Cape Douglas and the Glenelg Highway.

According to Mr McEvoy’s report, residents were provided with two letters asking if they supported an expansion to the bin service, with the first sent on April 30.

The second letter sent on June 24 stated that if survey responses were not received back by the council a lack of response would treat them as in support of the expansion.

Mr McEvoy noted there was also potential for council to expediate offering collection services to other properties presently enroute to council townships, after a separate motion by Councillor Barry Kuhl on the matter passed council in July.

These include properties along the Riddoch Highway heading to Tarpeena.

At the time council administration was “very supportive” of Cr Kuhl’s motion, according to chief executive Darryl Whicker’s comments at the July meeting.
