A local husband and wife poultry-showing duo has won Champion Bird in Show and Reserve Champion Bird in Show at the Geelong Super Show along with seven Section Champion titles.
Mount Gambier couple Trevor and Denise Dent were excited to add the awards to their growing list of poultry showing accomplishments. “We have won Champion Bird in the Royal Melbourne show once and Reserve Champion there twice,” Mr Dent said. “In the Royal Adelaide show we have won Champion Bird and Reserve Champion Bird. “I started poultry showing as a kid in 1969 with my father but Denise and I have been showing together for 38 years as TJ and DN Dent.
Mr and Mrs Dent competed in 11 of the 22 sections in the Geelong Super Show, which is made up of ‘the best of the best’ in the poultry showing business. “Out of these sections we got seven Section Champions and one Reserve Section Champion Bird,” Mr Dent said.
Mr Dent said after the 22 section champions were announced, a judge chose a Champion Bird in Show and a Reserve Champion Bird in Show. “Out of all 22 section champions including our 7 Section Champions the judge chose our Peking Duck as the Champion Bird in Show and our White Wind Up Bantom as the Reserve Champion Bird in Show,” he said.
Mr Dent said of the $1000 prize money for Champion Bird in Show, the couple was able to keep $600 and $400 was to be donated to a club of their choice. “Being local and a life member, we donated the $400 to the Mount Gambier Poultry Pigeon Club,” Mr Dent said.
This is the first show the Dents have competed at this year, with the poultry show season-spanning until September. “Poultry showing is a passion of ours, we have been doing it for a long time and have had a lot of success in it,” Mr Dent said. Those interested in poultry showing can contact the Mount Gambier Poultry Pigeon club, with two shows at the Mount Gambier Showgrounds to be held on June 20 and August 1.
