Blessing held for Robe fishing fleet

Many of the Robe-based fishing vessels took part in the annual Blessing of the Fleet at Robe last week with the crews of a dozen local boats seeking divine protection.

As part of the service, celebrant Jan Bermingham blessed a crucifix and then tossed it into the waters of the Lake Butler Marina.

The retrieved cross will now be carried throughout the upcoming 2023-24 season.

While stationed in a small tinny, the celebrant also blessed the fishing boats as they moved around the marina.

Another important aspect of the Blessing of the Fleet is the laying of wreaths at the nearby fishermen’s memorial.

One of the wreaths was placed by the family of retired fisherman Arthur Fennell who had passed away in the preceding 12 months.

Aged in his 80s, he had fished out of Robe for around 50 years.

Support in staging the public event is provided each year by the Robe Professional Fishermen’s Association.

Treasurer Paul Regnier said the 2023 Robe Blessing of the Fleet was viewed by a gathering of 120.

“There is usually a greater number when it coincides with the October holiday long weekend,” Mr Regnier said.

“We are grateful to the Robe Lions Club who provided a barbecue and beverages along with the Allsorts Music troupe.

“Jan Bermingham has been our celebrant for many years.

“Joy rides aboard lobster boats around Rivoli Bay proved popular once again with the boats skippered by Kevin Slaughter, Andrew Dening and Warren Ludwig.”

A similar Blessing of The Fleet will be staged at Beachport on September 30.
