Blockbuster event draws crowd to city

South Australian’s longest running Lego event returned to Mount Gambier on the weekend much to the joy of more than 1500 Lego lovers.

The seventh installment of the Empak Homes BrickGambier took place at the Mount Gambier Show Hall on Sunday and Monday for hour and a half long sessions from 10am – 4pm each day.

There were over 40 exhibitors from the South East, Adelaide, Melbourne and as far away as Tasmania showing off their Lego displays which included Harry Potter, Star Wars and Lego City themes, a Disney Incredibles mosaic, “out of the box” creations, a large ship, a spaceship and a carnival.

There were well-used interactive play tables, a photo booth and a sensory friendly session on Monday morning which was well attended.

Empak Homes BrickGambier organiser Emma Robinson said people attended from locally s well as interstate from Portland and Warrnambool with hardcore lego fans even attending from Adelaide.

“Despite there being so many things on in Mount Gambier this weekend, it’s been well attended which has been fantastic and some amazing comments which has been really, really cool,” she said.

“The wet weather actually plays to our advantage because it brings people in.

“I have had a bit of interest from people wanting to join our local club which is lovely and also potential exhibitors for next year which is also good.

“We had a lot of positive feedback about the guys with the carnival out the back and the trains and the great ball contraption are always popular.”

The Michael Smith Memory Lane was unveiled on Saturday night after speeches shared from 16 people at Mr Smith’s memorial service which was attended by his two brothers and nieces and nephews from Adelaide and Gippsland respectively.

“His family were very moved by it all. It was good for the family to hear the same traits coming through. I think they were really touched by it all,” Mrs Robinson said.

“I announced about the memory lane which his brothers were quite moved about too because they did not know I was doing that so that was a surprise for them.”

The Michael Smith Memory Lane will live on as a collaborative display each year highlighting a different aspect of Lego history.

The Empak Homes BrickGambier exhibitor auction raised $1800 for the Mount Gambier Royal Flying Doctors Support Group, with members in attendance over the weekend selling raffle tickets.
