BMX club pulls off mega weekend

Hosting four major events across three jam-packed days sounds like an exhausting task and Blue Lake BMX Club president Stephen Jones admitted it was tiring, but rewarding work.

“It was a huge effort from everyone to make it happen,” he said.

“We are just very thankful to a lot of good people around the town and club that came together.

“Once everyone in the committee went home on Monday night we all fell asleep straight away.”

Despite the on-track action being ultra-competitive, there was also a tremendous sense of camaraderie around the venue.

Whenever a rider fell off, someone was there to help them back up and the crowd erupted with encouragement from the sidelines.

Jones said the positive atmosphere and willingness to help out was summed up by an incredible gesture from the Portland BMX Club to keep the action going just when disaster struck.

“We had an issue with our start gate on Saturday, so we are very thankful for the Portland club for saving the day,” he said.

“They just jumped in the car, drove across the border to Portland, got their gate from their club and brought it back for us to use for the rest of the weekend.

“We only lost an hour and a half of racing which was amazing.”

Plenty of local riders defended home turf with pride and put in some outstanding performances.

In the SA v Vic titles Lily Kradolfer stole the show dominating the 11-12 Girls division.

Jaiden Picken also emerged victorious winning the 13-16 Boys grade with a flawless ride through the SA v Vic events.

Not to be outdone, Sherridan Picken, Peter Jelleff, Trae Wilke, Angus McKinnon and Kynan Davey also put the host club on the podium.

During Sunday’s State Series action, Lily Jones was untouchable overcoming the bumps on her home track smashing the 12 Girls field.

Picken continued his winning streak in the 14 Boys class, while Davey improved from his solid Saturday performance to win the 35-39 Men category.

The SA Country Championships concluded proceedings on Sunday where Kradolfer completed her hat-trick.

She won each heat and final yet again this time in the 11-12 Girls class to finish unbeaten after three big days of racing.

Riding with the #1SA plate, Picken stepped up again to control the 13-16 Boys class, while Archie Murdock and Jellegg won their respective 9-10 and 30+ male finals.

Stephen Jones said numerous other locals also starred.

“Tom Castleman, Brad Jennings and Angus McKinnon all did great jobs,” he said.

“Hannah Jackson was also exceptional, going four seconds faster than her previous best time and really got amongst it.”

The efforts of the local riders helped South Australia win bragging rights from its cross-border neighbours.

Jones said it was still a great achievement, but conceded the home team had a small advantage.

“We did not have as many Victorians as usual, but there is still a lot of racing going on in Victoria,” he said.

“A lot of them had just come from a massive weekend in Bendigo, which stopped a few from going, but we still had around 50 Victorians taking part.”

After hundreds of races were done and won over the three days, suddenly the Blue Lake BMX Club will be a lonely place with more events on the 2022 calendar.

However, Jones revealed something could be in the pipeline to bring racing back, but if it does not, the positive experiences from the tripleheader will fuel the club to strive for more success in the future.

“This will give a lot of people an incentive and bit of motivation to travel away, see what some of the other tracks are like and take on some new challenges,” he said.

“Sometimes it takes a big event at home to make people realise they can enjoy these things and be competitive.

“That is our big event done and dusted for another year, but there are still plenty of series events going on.

“We are hoping to have a big event with Portland between the two clubs to help us out down the track.”
