THE TWELFTH MAN
HDCA – B Grade
CASTERTON District has finished its Hamilton and District Cricket Association B grade home and away season in style with a huge nine-wicket thrashing of St Andrews at Pedrina Park 1 and has claimed third spot on the ladder in doing so.
The visitors won the toss and sent their hosts into bat with early wickets falling to Will Kerr and Jake Tomkins to hand the early game advantage to the Maroons.
A third wicket partnership of 70 between Damien Logan (36) and his brother Jamie (41) handed the home side some momentum, but when Damien Logan was trapped in front of his stumps, LBW, by Justin Carlin the run rate slowed.
The final tally of 7-148 was just reward for a good bowling display from the Casterton District bowlers as Carlin finished with the honours in taking 3-23.
After the tea break the visitors lost Carlin (11) early with only 30 runs on the board and Jake Tomkins retired out with 40 next to his name.
But was the only success the home celebrated as the target was reached in only 21.2 overs as Tim Holmes (56-not-out) and Sam Broomby (39-not-out) added an unbroken 86 run partnership for the third wicket.
The bonus point victory ensured the Maroons finished on third rung of the premiership ladder and they will travel to Dahl Turf to battle Hamilton in the semi final where the winner will advance to the grand final at Clem Young Oval in two weeks’ time.
