Bowlers make waves at coastal carnival

The Port MacDonnell Bowling Club held it’s 13th annual invitation Men’s two-day Carnival with the support of Versace Home Builders, Grant District Council, Bendigo Bank, MGA Insurance and Gambier Earth Movers.

Teams from Adelaide, the Riverland, upper and Lower South East were welcomed, but sadly teams from Victoria were prevented from participating due to COVID-19.

Play started at 9.30am in perfect conditions for bowling with 20 teams playing a game of 21 ends before lunch and another in the afternoon.

The morning game resulted in two rinks with a draw and two rinks with one shot difference which provided a great contest to start the day.

At the end of play there were only two teams to win both games.

Paul Weir’s local team won on both occasions plus seven and Gavin Rowe from Kalangadoo won two plus three.

Tuesday morning started at 9am in cool and overcast conditions and the two game winners from the previous day found the going a lot harder.

The overall prize went to Robe after Paul Truelove, Errol Jennings, Pat lynch and Ken Smith finished with seven points and 41 shots up.

The runners-up were Des Moulden, John Robinson, Harry Childs and Ian Moulden from Mount Gambier RSL.

The Toorak/Clearview team of Paul Daminato, Adam Creek, John Buccaccio and Trevor Feast rounded out the podium with six points and 31shots up.

Naracoorte’s Rob Selig, Ron Gatton, Eric Pitt and Ian Williams were fourth with six points and 23 shots up.

On day two Mount Gambier RSL emerged victorious after Alex Heesman, Ian MacIntosh, Graham Ellis and Gary Feast recorded the fine score of 89 points and 36 shots up.

The hosts Port MacDonnell was forced to settle for second after Lance Fisher, Barrie Schmidt, Danny Gaut and Robert Hutchesson claimed 87 points and 22 shots up.

The winning team of the second game of the second day was Naracoorte’s

David Jones, Bob Haggett, Terry Mahney and Roger Farley with 47 points and 17 shots up.

A combined Mount Gambier team featuring Graham Crowder, Graham Smith, Steve Farrell and Jeff England won the opening game on the second day.

John Naismith, Kel Butler, Paul Weir and Terry Seiler from the Bay gave the home fans something to cheer about winning the first game of the opening dat with 83 points and seven shots up.

Leon Fox, Peter Bruhn, Gary Bowering and Wayne Legutho from Mount Gambier also had a win on the opening day with 46 shots and 17 shots Up.

Winners of the combination team game were Jim Philpot, John Hughes, Chris Richards and Bryan Vorwerk with 42 points and five shots up.

Runners-up were Keith Dowdell, Wayne Dowdell, Gavin Rowe and Adam Wilson.
