Bruising return to play

Rugby League returned to the Limestone Coast on Saturday with an entertaining round-robin competition at Malseed Park.

The Blue Lake Knights were joined by intrastate rival the Naracoorte Jets and metro-based club the South Adelaide Bulldogs.

The 2020 season has been heavily impacted due to COVID-19 with four of the Limestone Coast Rugby League competition teams based in Victoria and unable to participate.

However, a three-team event held under modified Rugby League nines riles ensured South Australian residents could still enjoy some action.

The two visiting teams opened proceedings and the impressive Jets made a statement.

The travel-affected Bulldogs struggled to match Naracoorte’s intensity and lost 24-0.

Doubles were scored by captain Dylan Kake Oliver and Siko Ranuku, while Ofisa Ofisa claimed a try.

The home side took to the field in the second game, but South Adelaide fought back to win 18-10.

The knights started strong and scored the first try of the game with second rower Will Trench diving under the posts.

However, costly ball handling mistakes led to three unanswered tries by the Bulldogs.

Blue Lake captain Lloyd Pearce Rasin brought his side back in the game after bullying his way across the line late in the second half.

But another South Adelaide try wiped out any hopes of a comeback.

The final encounter saw the traditional SA rivals Knights and Jets compete in a bruising affair.

After a hard-fought clash Naracoorte continued its dominance over Blue Lake and won 10-4.

Tries were scored by Rameka Reid and Epati Luni.

The Jets’ solid defence proved too much for the Knights, who could only cross their try line once on the wing through Tom Dolan.

Blue Lake and Naracoorte will meet again at Malseed Park on Saturday, October 31 to play full MRLSA 13’s rules.
