Burston ready to push the boundaries

Lower South East Hockey Association player Brayden Burston is making inroads to his hockey career and has been selected to play for South Australia this
month.

Burston, plus fellow LSEHA stars David Vine, Connor Grant, Lochie Nisbert and Julian Smith will represent the state at the Hockey Australia Country Challenge this week.

The week-long tournament has just begun at Albany Western Australia where South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Australian Defence Force will take on the hosts in pursuit of national glory.

Burston has been a standout throughout his career which has led to him being selected in the country state team alongside some of the best.

He said it was a big opportunity for himself and his teammates to make an impression on the big stage.

“We are going to Albany to compete with others in David Vine, Connor Grant, Lochie Nisbet and Julian Smith and are all from the Lower South East,” Burston said.

“For me, it’s to learn new experiences and compete in the highest competition.

“But as a team we are hoping to get to the top four and win one of the medals.”

Burston has many fond memories of his time playing hockey.

“Last year I won my first A Grade premiership with West Gambier and have recently become the A Grade women’s coach of West as well,” he said.

“But it is a new experience for me coaching a higher grade.”

Burston’s career started way back at school level and from there he has developed the passion to play hockey which has been evident for the last 10 years.

“I really love playing hockey,” he said.

“I really enjoy it and (like) coaching the juniors as well.”

Having started at the bottom and working his way up Burston likes what he sees in the junior competition and highlighted West has shown big improvement this season after not having enough boys in the Under 12’s grade.

The finals of the Hockey Australia Country Challenge will be held this Saturday.
