Call to connect

The region’s LGBTQIA+ advocacy group has announced it will wind up but has called for stronger support for the regional queer community as it exits the sector.

Limestone Coast Connect, an organisation dedicated to supporting the LGBTQIA+ community in the Limestone Coast, announced its wind-up process, aiming for full cessation by December 1, 2023.

LCC Chair Patrick Smith said the decision was made to ensure the legacy of LCC continued to positively impact the LGBTQIA+ community, even as the organisation transitions to new beginnings.

“As part of its wind-up announcement, LCC is calling on regional Members of Parliament and Mayors to do better at supporting LGBTQIA+ communities in regional areas,” he said.

“While acknowledging that progress has been made, LCC believes that further support is needed to create inclusive and accepting environments for LGBTQIA+ individuals living outside metropolitan areas.

“LCC also calls on the State Government to do better at assisting LGBTQIA+ communities in regional areas.

“The organisation highlights the importance of allocating resources and funding to support regional initiatives that address the unique needs and challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals.

“Additionally, LCC encourages Adelaide-based LGBTQIA+ organisations to reach out more effectively beyond Adelaide and engage with regional communities.

“Building stronger connections with regional LGBTQIA+ groups can help bridge the gap and ensure that support and resources are accessible to all South Australians, regardless of their location.”

Mr Smith said the group was formed in 2017 by a group of dedicated individuals passionate about creating a supportive community for the LGBTQIA+ population in the Limestone Coast.

He said over the years, LCC had achieved “notable successes”, including hosting inclusive social events that fostered a strong sense of community and belonging, advocating for the rights and well-being of LGBTQIA+ individuals, raising awareness and promoting equality.

Mr Smith said the group had built collaborative partnerships that strengthened the LGBTQIA+ community in the Limestone Coast, shared vital resources and information to support individuals in their journey and welcomed memberships and donations that allowed LCC to make a meaningful impact.

“Limestone Coast Connect is a volunteer-driven and donation-funded organisation dedicated to creating a positive impact in the lives of the LGBTQIA+ community and those connecting with the community in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia,” he said.

“While its capacity to run its own support services was limited, LCC primarily focused on organising engaging social events and advocating for the rights and well-being of LGBTQIA+ individuals. LCC worked to foster a sense of belonging and empowerment within the community.”
