ABIG fan and long-time supporter of the Kelpie Muster has taken her love of the working dog to a new level – and Casterton plays a starring role!
Guided by a lifelong love of children’s literature and storytelling, Anne Mallia pursued her dream of becoming a children’s book author to leave behind a legacy that inspires imagination and connection.
Her debut picture book, Mackie, inspired by her Australian Kelpie, captures the joy of adventure while exploring themes of learning, growing up and the bonds that shape us.
“The story was inspired by my own beloved Kelpie, the challenges and joys of growing up, and the strong connection my family has developed with the annual muster since we first attended in 2019,” Ms Mallia said.
“These experiences have been instrumental in shaping both the narrative and the values behind the book.”
The beautifully illustrated book celebrates the unique spirit of the region, brought to life through the stunning artwork of south-west artist, Dunkeld’s artist Emma Stuart.
Ms Stuart has been illustrating Children’s books for the past 20 years.
In that time she has illustrated more than 200 books, published by Hachette, New Frontier, Little steps, Brolly Books, the Enid Blyton Estate, Book Group and the ABC.
She has also recently worked on a title for the Duchess of York through Serenity Press.
In August 2023, Ms Stuart had her first author / illustrated early childhood picture book published by Serenity press – Peewii and the Tree – a book aimed at teaching little ones about the magic and importance of trees.
“Her talent has perfectly captured the essence of the Casterton community and the timeless bond we share with our four-legged companions,” Ms Mallia said.
Currently in production and set to launch at the 2025 Kelpie Muster, Mackie is a heartfelt tribute to the iconic Kelpie heritage and features a special piece on the Casterton township.
