The Mount Gambier Cancer Support Group has been successful in receiving a grant to help fund their insurance for a second consecutive year through the Community Underwriting Small Grants Program.
The local organisation received their inaugural grant from the program in 2023 after being made aware of it through their insurance provider, Willow General Insurance.
The organisation was awarded a grant of $2000 through the program’s Travel Vouchers Project.
Willow General Insurance broker Jamie Hunter received a certificate of appreciation from the Mount Gambier Cancer Support Group committee for aiding the group in securing the grant.
Community Underwriting works with brokers such as Willow General Insurance and their clients to provide insurance to an extensive range of not for profit and charity organisations from around Australia.
Meals On Wheels New South Wales is behind the program and has been involved in helping not for profits obtain effective insurance for more than 20 years.
What started from a few meals services having difficulty obtaining insurance 25 years ago, has today grown to providing insurance to around 4000 not for profits across Australia and more than $11m in annual premiums.
The Mount Gambier Cancer Support Group aids locals suffering with cancer and their families with financial support all around the South East extending to Bordertown.
They help with a broad range of expenses on a needs basis including accommodation, fuel and food vouchers, wigs and medical, dental and school expenses.
Some of the fundraising activities the group performs include golf days, raffles, barbecues, meal nights, afternoon teas and business/corporate sponsorship.
The Mount Gambier Cancer Support celebrated 44 years on February 5 with chairperson Lorraine Musgrove saying the group of around 20 volunteers are needed now more than ever with the ongoing cost of living crisis.
