Boandik Lake Terrace is set to become a leader in aged care innovation, securing $2870,625 funding through the Federal Government’s Aged Care Capital Assistance Program (ACCAP).
The funding will enable a complete redevelopment of the Moore Court section of Boandik Kessal into a purpose-built, dementia-friendly unit designed to provide best-practice care for residents living with dementia.
The project, which will be constructed within the existing Lake Terrace home (Boandik Kessal), is expected to take 18 months to complete and will ensure Boandik is positioned to meet the growing need for dementia-specific care in the region.
This significant investment is part of the government’s $250m commitment to improving aged care in regional, rural, and remote areas.
Boandik is one of only seven providers in South Australia to secure funding through this highly competitive program, which aims to improve access to quality aged care for underserved communities.
Boandik chief executive Dr Pamela Alde described the funding as a “historic achievement” for the organisation and a lifeline for the Mount Gambier community.
“This grant will enable us to create a purpose-built, dementia-friendly environment designed to provide the highest standard of care,” she said.
“Dementia care requires a specialised approach, and this redevelopment is about creating a home where residents living with dementia feel safe, respected, and supported.”
Dr Alde said the current Moore Court facility, which was closed in late 2023 due to outdated infrastructure, will undergo a complete transformation.
The new unit will provide 11 private rooms with ensuites, modern communal areas and thoughtful design features tailored to the unique needs of residents living with dementia.
“This is more than just a renovation,” Dr Alde said.
“It’s about ensuring that our community has access to the services it desperately needs. The re-development will address a critical shortage of dementia-specific care in Mount Gambier while setting a benchmark for future developments.”
Dr Alde said with the number of people living with dementia rising rapidly across Australia, the redevelopment is timely.
“Currently, approximately 700 people in Mount Gambier are living with dementia, a number projected to grow to 1109 by 2054,” she said.
“Despite this, the region has only 33 dementia-specific beds, leading to long waiting lists and limited access to the specialised care many residents need.”
Dr Alde highlighted the challenges posed by the current lack of capacity.
“Families across our region are struggling to find appropriate care for their loved ones,” she said.
“Long waiting lists and the absence of suitable facilities have placed enormous strain on families and the broader healthcare system. This redevelopment will help close that gap and ensure that older South East Australians receive the specialised support they deserve.”
Dr Alde said the dementia-friendly facilities were essential for the future of aged care.
“This project will ensure that Boandik remains at the forefront of dementia care, providing the services that our community needs now, and in the years to come,” she said.
“This investment in infrastructure will also have a broader positive impact on the larger Limestone Coast region, creating local employment opportunities during the construction phase and providing long-term benefits for the community.
“Construction is expected to begin mid-2024 and will generate local employment opportunities, contributing to the economic development of the Limestone Coast.
Minister for Aged Care Anika Wells said older Australians deserve access to safe and quality aged care services – regardless of where they live.
“This funding will help providers like Boandik deliver modern, home-like environments that prioritise dignity, safety, and cultural care,” she said.
The redeveloped Moore Court will also feature design elements that promote a calming and supportive environment, such as natural lighting, clear wayfinding, and sensory gardens.
These enhancements are designed to improve care outcomes and enhance the quality of life for residents living with advanced dementia.
Boandik Board Chairperson Vicki Quinn said the funding was a testament to Boandik’s dedication to excellence in aged care.
“It empowers us to enhance our services and better meet the needs of our community,” she said.
“The board is immensely proud of this achievement, which aligns with our strategic goal to provide innovative and compassionate care for older Australians.
“The redevelopment will not only improve care for residents but also provide a supportive environment for staff to deliver best-practice dementia care.
“We look forward to the positive impact this project will have on families and individuals in Mount Gambier and the surrounding areas.”
