Round 7 of the Veolia Limestone Coast Women’s Football League saw a change of venue with Island Park giving up its hosting rights to Kongorong, while Millicent’s McLaughlin Park was also in action.
As the sun started to set, 6.50pm was the perfect time for the opening bounce where host team Kongorong took on Casterton Sandford in an important fixture with both teams eyeing fourth spot on the ladder.
The contest did not disappoint right from the first bounce, as the Hawks midfield was strong and pushed the ball forward to put the first score on the board with a major.
The Cats were also strong in the centre square pushing forward but Kongorong’s engine room nullified the Victorians’ attack to gain the upper hand and hold a six-point lead at quarter time.
Leading the charge was the general Sarah Lucas at centre half back, with strong support from Evie Sealey across the ground, Janita Galloway in the middle along with Tamika Mullan in the ruck.
The second quarter was a different ball game with Casterton Sandford digging deep with ball movement and in and under pressure.
The visitors put score board pressure on to outdo the Hawks and run away with a good lead.
The likes of Chloe Smith, Zhane Crawford, Carlie Smith, Chantelle Johnston and Georgia Costello ensured the home team could not get back in the game and help the Cats win the game comfortably by 67 points.
The Mundulla v South Gambier clash followed and it was a great sight having football under lights at Kongorong with a large crowd watching on.
But Mundulla was no match for the Demons’ fast running and slick skills.
The Mundulla side still put in a four-quarter effort, but South controlled proceedings on the scoreboard winning by 32 points.
The Demons’ assault was fronted by Alice Tentye, Scarlet Creek, Kendell Saffin and Lauren Frost, while Mundulla’s best were Zoe Hawker, Kellsie Turner, Kaylene Nuske and Natasha Horne.
Over at McLaughlin Park North Gambier was no match for the firing Penola Eagles.
The Tigers did not trouble the scorers until the last quarter in a one-sided affair where Angela Broad and Emma MacDonald helped the Eagles to win by six goals.
Millicent took on Kybybolite at home and suffered a long night as the latter put on a master class.
The visitors kept the Saints scoreless throughout the match, while Sophie Henschke and Lily Gill were unstoppable at the other end kicking a total of 12 goals in the 142-point win.
Hopefully the Saints can take something from the game and bounce back in the next round after Megan Tilby and Michelle Robinson performed admirably.
