Champions crowned

It was a big week at the Mount Gambier RSL Bowls Club with numerous competitions played at the venue recently.

The conclusion of the Ladies Championship Singles was played on Sunday.

After strong semi-final wins, Kym Franklin and Veronica Opie met in the decider with a new format of first to 25 shots crowned the winner.

Veronica Opie got off to a flying start by winning four shots on the first end, while Kym Franklin fell behind.

Opie produced some wonderful, controlled draw bowling to run out the eventual Champion with a score of 25 shots to five.

On the same day the Ladies B Grade Singles Championships were contested with a strong entry of eight players in a first to 18 shots format.

In the first semi-final, Sandi Elliott overcame reigning champion Nancy Horrigan, last year’s runner-up Liz Schroeder defeated Marg Finnis. After a one-hour break, the final took place in cooler conditions and Elliott snatched an early lead.

With the winner the first to 21 shots, the game was even for a few ends before Elliott forged ahead and won 21-11.

The club’s Men’s Championship Pairs drew strong entries when it started on Saturday.

David O’Donnell and Laurie Franklin excelled beating the fancied Deane Wilkinson and Rex Heins before a pulsating win against the father-son combination of Garry and Michael Fox after an extra end.

Stalwart Ralph Stafford and partner Gary Bowering played steady bowls to beat top pairing Rob Corner and Andy Ashby.

Another family pairing of Strawb and Ben Masters progressed by overcoming Graeme Smith and Rick Falaize, while Gary Feast and Graham Ellis played well to beat John Spher and John Robinson.

A Men’s Aggregate drawn competition had 36 bowlers attend making 12 teams of three bowl triples with two games of 10 ends.

A competitive competition resulted in a fine overall win for the team of Gary Walters, Alan Hill and David Smith.

Mid-week Pennant games resumed this week with mixed results for the RSL teams.

Mount Gambier RSL Red team completed the short distance to face Gambier Blue and went down 57 shots to 41.

Wayne Legutko’s rink went down by an agonising single shot, but Smith’s rink did not have a good day and was defeated 19-34.

RSL Blue travelled to Naracoorte and was able to get the maximum number of points with a 63-38 win in windy conditions.

Lindsay Moyle’s rink hung on for a solid six-shot victory and Carmel McQuade’s rink had a resounding 37-18 triumph, which puts the Blue team one point in front of the Red team on the ladder into the sixth and seventh position respectively.
