Change of hospital scenery

It has been a busy few months for Millicent artist Peter Dunn as his latest two commissioned murals have now been erected at Millicent and District Hospital.

The supersized paintings are on two of the exterior walls of the special care room which is undergoing a complete refurbishment.

Both depict an area which could be the Lake McIntyre wetland and feature eight species of birds including swans, pelicans and cranes.

The murals are similar to Peter’s art on the exterior wall of Fosters Foodland in Millicent.

An important difference is the latest murals were painted on panels in Peter’s home studio and then transported to the hospital for hanging this week.

Helping Peter with this chore were members of the Millicent and Surrounding Areas Health Support Group.

“I was approached last December by Sandy Melrose from the Imagine Millicent arts group to see if I would be interested in painting the murals,” Peter said.

“I said a ‘yes’ to explore it further.

“The Millicent Health Advisory Council was also enthusiastic and the two organisations met the project costs of $3000.

“I have since been working slowly on the murals at home.

“I think the blue colouring is serene and the murals enhance the whole area.

“People who pass the courtyard of the special care room can see the murals.”

The murals are 2.4m high and were painted on weather-proof fibro cement boards.

The courtyard of the special care room allows patients and family members to enjoy fresh air and sunshine.

Trained at the South Australian School of Art in Adelaide, Peter is not sure of his new project.

He likes to enter the annual art shows staged by the SE Arts Society and the Wattle Range Council.

Peter volunteers his time at the Millicent Gallery and is currently taking down the month-long exhibition featuring 10 local artists including himself.

It will be re-hung by Peter and others at the Dr David Harris Room at the Millicent Visitor Information Centre.

Coming into the gallery will be a display by the Millicent Craft Group.
