Charity funds haul

With the rumble of engines and the tooting of horns a group of local truckies on Saturday raised more than $3000 for children in need at Christmas.

Well known charity fundraiser Adam Smith pulled together the “Doing it for the kids” Christmas truck convoy in six days, drawing support from local truck companies from across the region.

“Myself and my mate Wig (Chris Stockwell) organised a truck convoy in 6 days,” Mr Smith said.

“We had 20 trucks roll up and we raised $3245 for Baptist Care to give toys to families for Christmas.”

The convoy travelled from Dohnts at Nangwarry through to the Blue Lake Public Golf Links at Mount Gambier, finishing with a barbecue for those taking part.

Mr Smith said he was overwhelmed by the support from local businesses, with major sponsors The Truck Factory, Ray Scott Transport, Dean and Robyn Harrip, Bill Burley from the Blue Lake Public Golf Links, Collins Court Butchers, Grays.com, Merrett Logging and Prestige Truck Detailing.

“Prestige Truck Detailing donated $250 cash for the best decorated truck, which was won by Dean Harrip,” he said.

“But Dean has such a big heart, despite being one of the first to hand over his own cash donation to the cause, turned around and donated his prize straight back to the toy run.

“Gestures like that mean a lot. “I was totally blown away to raise so much money in such a short time and to know that all money raised is going straight to the kids of Mount Gambier and surrounds through Baptist Care.

“I am very grateful for the ongoing support of the truckies and it was a team effort by all to help local kids and families doing it tough at this time of year.”
