Chief executive fuels servo talk

Millicent will again have a second manned service station within two months.

This is the opinion of Wattle Range Council chief executive Ben Gower about the fate of the now-closed, council-owned “servo” on Adelaide Road.

It was closed over three months ago by leaseholders AMPOL with the loss of seven jobs.

Within a day of its August 4 closure, signage, most pumps and other fittings had been removed while three-metre tall security fencing had been erected around the perimeter of the site.

The 20-year lease between AMPOL and freehold owners Wattle Range Council ended on October 31.

In the meantime, AMPOL has remediated the site including the removal of soil and the underground fuel tanks.

Mr Gower gave an update at the November monthly council meeting following a question-without-notice from Councillor Peter Dunnicliff.

He said council had been privately negotiating with another firm K&S to buy the site and negotiations were well advanced.

The council chief executive anticipated the facility would reopen early in 2022.

Within the past decade, Millicent has lost service stations on Mount Gambier Road and Billygoat Corner.

It has been left with an unmanned facility on Mount Gambier Road and a 24/7 staffed K&S service station at Billygoat Corner.
