Chief executive steps down

Robe District Council chief executive James Holyman has stepped down from the administrative helm of the seaside council after more than four years in the role.

Mr Holyman had previously worked as the corporate and community services director with the Port Pirie Regional Council.

He came to Robe in March 2019 following the retirement of Roger Sweetman.

The vacancy had attracted a field of more than 60 applicants,

He has been on leave in recent months with consultant John Coombe and Infrastructure Director Robert Moir filling the position.

Robe District Mayor Lisa Ruffell agreed to accept the resignation of Mr Holyman as chief executive on Thursday.

“He presided over a significant period of change and was instrumental in overseeing major reforms to the Robe District Council and its finances,” Mayor Ruffell said

“The Mayor and Councillors of Robe District Council thank Mr Holyman for his service and wish him well in his future endeavours.

“Acting in the chief executive position during the recruitment process is Deb Brokenshire from The Governator.

“She has extensive experience in local government and her strong network will ensure stability for Robe District Council during this time.”

The previous Robe Council had awarded Mr Holyman a four year contract extension in August of last year.

According to the register published online in mid-2022, Mr Holyman received an annual salary of $155,000 and full use of a council-supplied vehicle and mobile phone.

Then Robe Mayor Alison Nunan explained the rational for the contract extension.

“Along with all other councils, we are working towards finalising some items and in our case, one of these is the contract for our chief executive,” Ms Nunan said.

“The contract had to be dealt with prior to the caretaker period on September 6 to avoid being in breach of his contract which is a standard CEO contract.

“Mr Holyman has undergone a full independent review with input from some community members, current employees and the elected members.

“At a meeting on August 24, 2022 the elected members voted to renew his contract for four years which we are pleased to say he has accepted.”

Ms Nunan said this provided ongoing stability for the community as it entered a period of change following the elections.
