City artist serves up creative work at Bordertown complex

A Mount Gambier artist is making his mark in Bordertown as part of a national project.

The hitting wall at Memorial Park Tennis Complex in Bordertown is undergoing a makeover as part of the nationwide Hitting Wall Project.

The Hitting Wall Project, launched in collaboration with Tennis Australia, will see hitting walls revamped across the country as part of an initiative designed to increase community participation in tennis off the back of soaring participation in 2020/21.

The hitting wall at Memorial Park Tennis Complex has been redesigned in a special art project by Mount Gambier-based artist Anthony Hamilton, in close collaboration with local tennis participants.

The two-sided mural features a solar system theme on one side, with a Bordertown Show theme on the other, both incorporating targets for participants to aim at.

Tatiara Tennis Association Junior Secretary and Competition Coordinator Jodie Wegener said the project would be completed in the coming weeks, with the finished product to be unveiled on Saturday 16 October.

“We are thrilled to see our Memorial Park Tennis Complex hitting wall being revamped,” Ms Wegener said.

“It came as such a surprise to have our venue selected, but we have had such fun working with Anthony and being involved in the project. We cannot wait to unveil the finished product in the coming weeks.”

Tennis Australia chief tennis and members officer Tom Larner was filled with praise for the initiative.

“With more than 450 hitting walls at affiliated venues and clubs across Australia and hundreds more in community parks and public settings, hitting against a wall is a great way for people of all ages to have fun, stay active and improve their tennis skills,” he said.

“Tennis has hit record participation milestones over the past 12 months and this initiative is yet another way to further galvanise potential players of all ages to pick up a racquet and have a hit.”
