‘City girl’ pursues engineering passion

Among the 400-strong workforce at the Kimberly-Clark Australia Millicent Mill is process engineer Nina Yu who has just clocked up two years at the plant.

Ms Yu no longer regards herself as a “city girl” because this regional location has given her the opportunity to pursue her passion for engineering.

She has reflected on her time with KCA and her career choice as one of three female engineers at the mill.

With a background in Chemical and Pharmaceutical Engineering from the University of Adelaide, where she graduated in 2022, Ms Yu brings a wealth of expertise to her role.

Her journey into engineering was sparked by her passion for chemistry and mathematics during high school.

A conversation with her chemistry teacher, who was a former chemical engineer, opened her eyes to the diverse possibilities within the field.

This led Ms Yu to pursue a career in chemical engineering, a decision she has not looked back on since.

“The collaborative nature of engineering is what I enjoy most,” Ms Yu said.

“Working alongside a diverse group of engineers, typically in teams of 10 to 20, allows me to tackle challenges from various perspectives.

“This teamwork dynamic fosters innovation and creates a supportive environment.

“My academic journey in engineering was both challenging and rewarding.

“I recall a significant shift in difficulty halfway through my studies and it was a challenge that many of my peers faced.

“Despite the rigorous demands of the curriculum, I persevered as I was driven by my passion for the field.

“As a female engineer, I am passionate about breaking stereotypes surrounding gender in engineering.

“While I acknowledge the existing biases, I firmly believe that engineering is a field open to all based on merit.”

Ms Yu encourages young women to pursue their interests in the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics subjects, emphasising the importance of self-confidence and resilience.

“Diversity is crucial for driving innovation in engineering,” she said.

“With my experience in product development, I understand the significance of diverse perspectives, especially in industries like mine, where products cater to a wide range of consumers.

“By fostering inclusivity and representation, engineering industries can create more impactful and inclusive solutions.

“I hope more young women in the region will pursue careers in engineering.

“I encourage young women to step out of their comfort zones, embrace challenges, and explore the endless possibilities within the field of engineering.”
