City ‘punches above weight’

Mount Gambier’s motor sport talent has been recognised by a popular website, declaring the Blue Lake city is “punching above its weight”.

V8 Sleuth’s Conner O’Brien published an article recently pointing out the ability of rising young drivers Kai Allen and Jobe Stewart, who have both tasted success in the Dunlop Super2 and Super3 series.

Allen will suit up for his first official Supercars race this weekend as a rookie, while Stewart will again contest the Super2 series.

O’Brien wrote the city is becoming “increasingly relevant” in the Supercars scene, with its homegrown products proudly flying the flag.

“More known for dirt racing and its Borderline Speedway facility, the town can lay claim to having had a hand in Supercars Championship, Bathurst 1000, Super2 and Super3 glory of late,” he wrote.

“Kai Allen won the 2023 Super2 crown and is now entering his rookie main game season with Grove Racing.

“Jobe Stewart won Super3 two years ago and is set to be a leading contender in this season’s second-tier title race, not to mention being guaranteed to make his Supercars and Bathurst 1000 debuts for Erebus Motorsport.”

After singing the praises of youngster Allen and Stewart, O’Brien turned his attention to Erebus’ fabricator James White, who builds chassis.

“And then there’s Erebus’ fabricator Jimmy White, whose chassis made out of Mount Gambier have been behind Brodie Kostecki’s championship and Great Race successes – and have since drawn interest from rivals including Dick Johnson Racing,” O’Brien wrote.
