City resident shares family story

Atelevision documentary which aired around the nation last week focussed on the remarkable personal story of Mount Gambier resident Linda Lawless.

She told her story in the SBS documentary series “Ever family has a secret” hosted by actress Noni Hazlehurst.

Born in Sydney out-of-wedlock around 60 years ago, Ms Lawless was told later in life that she was conceived during a passionate and consensual affair involving her mother and a Roman Catholic priest.

It is Roman Catholic canon law that its priests are celibate and he never acknowledged his daughter.

Despite pressure to give her up for adoption, her mother kept her and later married another man and had a further three children by him.

The Roman Catholic priest remained in the church, died in 1989 at the age of 71 and is buried in a cemetery near Daylesford, Victoria.

The SBS documentary featured footage of Ms Lawless meeting archivists and historians as well as members of the priest’s family, former parishioners and friends.

Ms Lawless has accepted the invitation of the South East Family History Group to speak at one of its monthly meetings in Millicent later in the year.
